The English vs. The French

Last week I met with Julie Swallow, our department’s Teaching & Learning Consultant, to discuss my student ratings, which a FERPA-abiding student had categorized. Our conversation was helpful and enjoyable; I now have a few specific things I plan to work on this semester. (Can you name-drop prayer and spirituality and life-long learning? I jest, I jestl! Sort of.)

Anyway, it was 12/10 experience! Contact Julie today to request a student ratings consultation: [email protected]!

Meeting with groups of students? Hope you have reserved a mini-conference room!

Many of us in the JKB are used to hosting group writing conferences in nearby small rooms with nary a thought of reserving it. The rooms are always empty!

Well, not anymore. We have room rivals: the French department! Ooh la la la! Making the situation worse, they have even reserved the rooms!

If you would like to meet with students in one of the JKB’s mini-conference rooms—4013, 4072, and 4072A—call 801-422-2775 or 801-422-2779 to reserve a room so you can kick people out with confidence!

NOTE: If you’re meeting with students one on one and your office is occupied, you can use the rooms in the fourth floor’s rabbit warren: 4026F, 4026G, 4026H, 4026J.

Join the Faculty Women’s Association today!

Dear Sister Adjunct Faculty Members,

Today I used $15 of my professional development money (via the department’s credit card) to join the Faculty Women’s Association (FWA).

When I joined, I even clicked on the box saying I would be willing to serve on a committee! (May the committee meeting times fit with my chauffeur job and may my assignment be the marketing committee—fellow adjunct Ansalee Greenwood gave me a stellar t shirt idea!)

I look forward to meeting women from all over the university, and I hope we can stir up a little trouble. I mean, do good and make BYU a better place for everyone to work.

Next week is the fall social. Maybe I’ll see you there?

Katie

Stuff for your calendar

You can spend it two ways: (1) checking out a credit card from the department for an in-person purchase, or (2) sending an email to [email protected] with a link to the item you’d like (might I suggest Teaching Mindful Writers!) and a one-sentence explanation of why the item will help you professionally (then just watch for an email announcing its arrival—voila!).

Our makeshift website

As I’ve noted before, Ansalee Greenwood, Greyson Gurley, Kelsey Smith, and I are hard at work writing content for our Adjunct Faculty Website (and we are continually surprised at how much stuff we need to cover!). Until this website is up and running, here are links to some helpful Google docs (which you can also find in your “swag” folder that’s sitting in your mailbox right now):

Observation Opportunities—sign up to be observed or find someone to observe!

Syllabus Requirements: I just added another option—the RWC’s official syllabus statement that you’re welcome to customize!

Write NOW!—want to get some of your own writing done? Write NOW! can help!
